Population
|
An entire collection of persons, things, or objects under study.

Sample/Sampling
|
A portion or subset of the population studied for information of the entire population.

Statistic
|
a number that is the property of a sample
e.g. if I have three class averages, then the one class average would be a statistic |

Parameter
|
a number that is the property of the population.
e.g. If I have three class averages, then the overall average would be a parameter of the population (entire sample). |

Representative Sample

the sample must contain the characteristics of the population in order to be an accurate representation of the population.
e.g. If I'm studying class averages for blacks, and I draw my sample from whites, then I do not have a representative sample. |

|

|
values are in equal units such as weight in pounds or time in hours.
