Population
An entire collection of persons, things, or objects under study.
Sample/Sampling
A portion or subset of the population studied for information of the entire population.
Statistic
a number that is the property of a sample
e.g. if I have three class averages, then the one class average would be a statistic
Parameter
a number that is the property of the population.
e.g. If I have three class averages, then the overall average would be a parameter of the population (entire sample).
Representative Sample
the sample must contain the characteristics of the population in order to be an accurate representation of the population.
e.g. If I'm studying class averages for blacks, and I draw my sample from whites, then I do not have a representative sample.
Variable
notated by capital letters like X, Y, Z, it is a characteristic of each person or thing in a population
Numerical Variables
values are in equal units such as weight in pounds or time in hours.
Categorical Variables
values that are more word oriented, such as Republican, Democrat, Pro-Life, Pro-Abortion, etc..
Data/Datum
actual values of a variable, they may be numbers or words
Datum is a single value
Average/Proportion
Average: A number that summarizes overall value of various sets of numbers.
Proportion: A number (usually fraction) that expresses the relationship between two or more things.
