Q: Describe the way particles are arranged in a solid, liquid, and gas.

Liquids freely move.

Solids can take the shape of whatever container there in.

Gases move freely.

Q: What can you tell me about the motion of the molecules in cold water?

They move around slowly and there is a lot.

They also get stiff.

Q: What can you tell me about the motion of the molecules in hot water?

Liquid Molecules generally move faster than solid, but slower than gases.

Hot Liquid molecules move quick/fast, and also spread apart.

Also not as fast or spread out as a gas.

Q: What are the two types of vaporization?

Vaporization occurs when a liquid turns into a gas.

Types: Evaporation - Occurs only on the surface of the liquid

describe what “Sublimation” is in a couple sentences.

Sublimation is a PHASE CHANGE.

Sublimation is when a solid changes directly to a gas.

Dry ice will never turn into a liquid.

It never goes through the liquid phase.

Q: List the variables and controls in the Mixing Colors Lab.

Controls -

stays the same in a experiment

Same color

Same amount of water

Same beaker

Same temperature

Variables- different in a experiment Amount of water

Different colors

Different temperature

Q: What do you think is happening in the giant barrel at the moment of the crush?

A:

Inside the barrel water is being heated. Molecules are fast-moving and are very spread out. Once the barrel is inside the pool water molecules start slowing down.

Why would balloons deflate outside in this type of weather?

Helium balloons normally have molecules that spread far apart and move fast. Outside it cold weather, the molecules move closer together and move much smaller, causing the outside of the balloon to cave it and appear to be deflating. When moved back it warm weather, the balloon returns its shape as the molecules begin to spread out again it the warmer environment.

Q: How do you think ice cubes change from a solid to a liquid? Hypothesize what you think is happening in a few sentences.

If you place an ice cube it heat, then it will melt and turn into water.

A phase change

Q: Describe the way particles are arranged in a solid, liquid, and gas

Liquids freely move.

Solids can take the shape of whatever container there in.

Gases move freely.
