What is matter

Any substance which has mass and occupies space is called matter

What is matter made up of

All Matter is made up of small particles called atoms

How many states of matter are there and what are they

There are three states of matter and they are

Solid

Liquid

Gas

What defines solids liquids and gases or in what basis the matter is divided into three states of matter

The arrangement of small particles or atoms is the basis on which the matter is divided into 3 states solid liquid and gas

What are solids .give characteristics of solid

Solids are substance in which the particles are very closely packed.the space between particles is no or very less.

They are usually very hard

They have fixed shape and volume

Some solids may change their shape like can be beaten or broken but only on applying force

What are liquids and give their characteristics

Liquids are substances in which the particles are not very closely packed.

They have definite mass and volume but no definite shape

They take the shape of the container they are poured into. They can flow from one place to another hence called fluids

What are gases. Describe them

Gases are substsnces in which the particles are very loosely packed. They donot have fixed shape or volume.they occupy all the space available in the container. Gases are also fluids because they flow from one place to another

Why is it that solids have fixed shape size and volume where as liquids and gases donot have

Solids are hard and have fixed shape and size and volume where as liquids and gases don't because in solids the space between the atoms is not there so or they cannot move where as there is space between atoms in liquids and gases so they can move

What are the differences between solids liquids and gases

Shape volume massSpace between moleculesFluidityAbility to change shape
