Normal waking consciousness |
The state of consciousness associated with Being awake and aware of our thoughts, memories, feelings and the sensations we are experiencing from the outside world. |

Altered states of consciousness |
Any state of consciousness that is distinctly different from NWC, in terms of level of awareness and experience, and the quality or intensity of sensations, perceptions, thoughts, feelings and memories that are experienced. |

Define attention |
A concentration of mental activity that involves focusing on a specific stimulus while ignoring other stimuli. Attention can be focused either on internal thoughts or external stimuli- and can shift between the 2. -shifts in focus of attention & therefore conscious awareness can be intentional or unintentional . |

Controlled processing |
Involves conscious, alert awareness and mental effort in which the individual actively focuses their attention on achieving a particular goal. |

Is controlled processing serial or parallel? |
It is serial- can only perform ONE task requiring controlled processing at a time. It is slow, effortful, makes heavy demands on attention & requires a high level of conscious awareness to be dedicated to a task. |

Automatic processing |
Requires little conscious awareness & mental effort, minimal attention and does not interfere with performance of other activities. Is used when a task is simple or familiar and tends to be rapid. |

Is automatic processing serial or parallel? |
It is parallel- can handle 2 or more tasks at once. When presented with conflicting stimuli, we cannot prevent automatic processing from dominating. |

Selective attention |
-involves choosing & attending to a specific stimulus to the exclusion of others. -more likely to attend to stimulus if important, if it changes or if new. -focus of internal & external awareness is on limited range of what we're capable of experiencing |

Divided attention |
-ability to distribute attention & undertake 2 or more activities simultaneously. -the level of attention required is not as focused/selective -can perform tasks better that are similar, not complex, familiar and do not demand considerable mental effort. -ability to divide attention depends on how much conscious effort is required for the tasks engaged in. |

Content held in our NWC is more restricted/limited than the content during and ASC. We are able to control what we allow into our NWC, for instance, through selective attention. |
