Tacit Statements

A tacit statement is a statement that plays a role in a given argument but which is NOT stated anywherein it. Both premises and conclusions may be tacit, and an argument that contains a tacit statement iscalled an enthymeme.

implicit statement

A statement that appears in some form in a given English argument, but is not clearlystated in an explicit manner.

assumption

Statements that the conclusion of an argument depends on; anything taken forgranted in an argument.

warranted assumption

Any premise that is either known to be true or else can be accepted as reasonable within the context of a given argument.

unwarranted assumption

A statement that is not commonly known to be true and cannot be reasonably accepted without further argument.

ideological reasoning

A line of reasoning that appeals to the arguer's worldview or deeply held beliefs.
