Random phenomenon |
A phenomenon which, when observed repeatedly under the same conditions, yields one of two or more possible outcomes which occur in an unpredictable manner. |
Deterministic phenomenon |
A phenomenon which, when observed repeatedly under the same conditions, always yields the same outcome. |
Sample space |
The collection of all possible outcomes of a chance experiment |
Event |
Any collection of outcomes from the sample space of a chance experiment |
Mutually exclusive/ disjoint |
Two events are mutually exclusive/disjoint if they have no outcomes in common |
Independent events |
The probability of an event occurring is the same before and after another event has occurred. P(E/F)= P(E) |
Dependent events |
The probability of one event occurring influences the likelihood of the other event. P(E) P(E/F) |
Sampling with replacement |
Once selected, an individual or object is put back into the population before the next selection. |
Sampling without replacement |
Once selected, an individual or object is not returned to the population prior to subsequent selections |
Conditional probability |
The probability of an event occurring given that another event has occurred |
Partition |
The division of a sample space into two or more disjoin sets. All the sets must be disjoint and the Union of all the sets must add up to the entire sample space. |
Display |
A distilling of the information in the data which is presented in a non-misleading manner that is readily understood by the viewer. |
