M.A.I.N. Causes

Militarism- Arms Race (competition for better technology of weapons).


Alliances- If hostile attacks a country, a friendly country comes in and helps out.


Imperialism- Countries colonize smaller countries to obtain resources for the mother land.


Nationalism- Pride for their own country, wanting it to be the best.

Why did Russia, Austria-Hungary, and Ottoman Empire want control of the Balkan States?

-Russia wanted to unite Slavic people so in exchange Russia could gain access to warm-water points.


-Austria-Hungary didn't like the idea of Slavic unity, being a threat to Austria-Hungary rule over the Balkan States


-Ottomans had control over the Balkans but it gradually lost its grip and territory of the Balkans.

What started the chain reaction of WWI?

The assassination of Archduck Ferdinand, by Black Hand member, Gavrilo Princip.

War Measures Act of 1914

Gave the gov't authority to take control of everything in the country.

Schlieffen Plan

It was a German plan made for a two-front war. Although it worked at the start, the Germans made changes, which countered the Schlieffen Plan leading to a stalemate.

Western Front

The area where the French and British faced Germany.

Eastern Front

The area where the Russians faced Germany.

War of Attrition

A strategy to deplete the enemy resources before yours are gone.

Marne (Sept 1914)

Stopped German advance, making the Schlieffen Plan a failure. Lead to trench warfare.

Total War

The people from back home help out by making equipment for those on the front lines.

Tannenberg & Masurian Lakes (1914)

Russia got wrecked.... but soldiers from Western Front were sent to Eastern Front to aid those against Russian forces. Cost the early win and transportation became costly.

2nd Battle of Ypres (April 1915)

First use of chlorine gas. "Piss on your hanky!!!"

The sinking of Lusitania 

Americans used this as in excuse to enter the war in 1917.

Verdun (Feb. 1916)

"Bleed the French white."


Casulties were approx. 1 million men.

Jutland (May 1914)

The only battle where German used their fleet once. British control over the seas.

Battle of the Somme (July 1916)

-First use of tanks


-1.25 million casulties 


-Newfoundland Regiment lost 90% of their men

Vimy Ridge (April 1917)


 

Canadians fighting as an independant, Canadian unit. Lead to a victory.

Useless in terms of man power and resources for a pointless victory.

Russian Revolution

Bolsheviks (Communist lead by Lenin) kick out the Czar. Germany and Russia go to peace, and German troops are relocated to the Western Front.

Hundred Days

Beginning of the end for German advance. Leads to armistice

A person who shoots down 5 planes.

Billy Bishop

The Canadian Ace who shot down 72 planes.

Reconaissance

Military spying on enemy territory via plane.

Merchant marine

Civilian ships that transported resources to the war front.

Convoy System

A group of war ships that protect merchant marines from the German wolfpacks.

U-boats

German submarines that come in wolfpacks, attacking merchant marines.

Victory Bonds

Bonds issued to obtain money to support the war effort.

Propaganda

Information to inspire an opinion to others.

Conscription

Forced enlistment into armed forces.

Military Service Act (1917)

It made conscription necessary, calling up young Canadians to be drafted to the war.

Military Voters Act

Allowed men and women serving overseas to vote.

Wartime Elections Act

Allowed Canadian women related to servicemen to vote.

Khaki election

1917 election named because of Borden's efforts to win the military votes.

An agreement by warring parties to cease fire.

-Imposed strict sanctions on Germany.


-Terms of peace between Germany and Allies.

-Formation of League of Nations.

League of Nations

An international organization that used collective security (one member is attacked, all members join together to fight aggressor.) Canadians earn a set as an independant country. It turned out to be useless later on.

Spanish Flu (1918)

Swept across Europe killing millions, and was carried to North America with the returning soldiers, leading to an approx. 21 million deaths.
