How did Stalin use his position in the Communist Party to his advantage?
He was Secretary-General, giving him the power to appoint and reassign members.
He appointed supporters to important posts and replaced allies of his opponents (especially Trotsky's) with his own allies
He controlled and influenced party members to support him
Many key officials were loyal to him as they were grateful to him for their positions
Stalin had support of grassroot members, allowing him to pass laws without opposition
He prevented opponents from having a large support base and removed them before they could amass supporters
The Rise Of Stalin
How did Stalin pretend to be close to Lenin?
He paid frequent visits to Lenin and gave party members and public that Lenin had favoured and trusted Stalin.
Stalin organised Lenin's funeral, made himself Chief Mourner and gave a funeral speech.
Gave Trotsky the wrong date, hence Trotsky didn't go, reducing Stalin's biggest rival's reputation. Trotsky lost the respect and support of Party and people.
Respect and support for Stalin grew .
The Rise Of Stalin
How did Stalin make Lenin's intentions not well known?
After Lenin suffered a stroke and went into semi-retirement, Stalin visited him often and was his connection to the world.
But they often quarreled and Lenin became suspicious of Stalin's intentions.
Lenin wrote a Testament, advising that Stalin be removed from his position of Secretary-General.
But, the party agreed the Testament not to be public as it criticised all members.
As the party felt that Trotsky was the greater threat, they ignored Lenin's warning.
Then, Stalin took over by default as next in command.
The Rise Of Stalin
How did Stalin play one opponent against the other?
Leftist -- radicals
Rightists -- conservatives

[Stalin joined Leftists and they got rid of Trotsky.
He then joined the Rightists and he rid the credibility of them, eliminating strong opponents.]

1)He allied himself with the moderate Politburo members (who saw Trotsky as a radical) and caused Trotsky to be expelled.
2)He isolated Kamenev and Zinoviev and broke his troika alliance with them. Then, he convinced moderates that they were plotting with Trotsky to overthrow the government, effectively discrediting and isolating them.
3)Stalin switched to win support of radicals. Bukharin and Rykov, moderates, opposed Stalin's measures. Rest of Politburo sided with Stalin and removed Bukharin. Rykov was later removed from his position.
The Rise Of Stalin
How did Stalin used his more popular theory of 'socialism in one country' to his advantage?
Stalin's theory of 'Socialism in one Country' was more popular than Trotsky's 'Worldwide Revolution'

Trotsky had the support of the Red Army after leading them to victory in the civil war and also the support of students.
This made him viewed as a huge threat and made him unpopular amongst the Politburo.
He argued with Lenin and the party, and openly criticised and challenged the organisation and policies of the party. This was seen as disloyalty to Lenin and the party.
He failed to convince the party of his theory.
Stalin made sure he had the support of other party members and made it seem like Trotsky was moving away from Party decisions and ideas.
This affected Trotsky's credibility in party.
Trotsky fell very ill around the time of Lenin's death and was too weak to amass supporters.
He chose to remain silent on Lenin's criticisms of Stalin.
Party members began to exclude him.
