Stage 1

Period of voluntary movement, Patient begins to lose consciousness, Stage ends with loss of ability to stand and becomes recumbent. (fear, excitement, struggling, urination, and defecation)

Stage 2

Period of involuntary movement, The "excitement" stage, stage ends with muscle relaxation, decreased respiratory rate, and decreased reflex activity. (irregular breathing, vocalization, padding, increased heart and respiratory rate)

Stage 3

Period of surgical anesthesia, divided in four planes: plane 1 not adequate for surgery.

Stage 3 Plane 2

Suitable depth for most surgical procedures, relaxed muscle tone, pedal and swallowing reflexes are absent, ventromedial eye rotation.

Stage 3 Plane 3

Deep Anesthesia - excessive for most procedures, poor to absent papillary light reflex; central eyeballs; moderately dilated pupils.

Stage 3 Plane 4

Early anesthesia overdose, patients are in danger of cardiac and respiratory arrest.

Stage 5

Period of anesthetic overdose, Resuscitate immediately to save the patient.
