ISA temperature and pressure
29.92 inHg
and 15*C at sea level |
Standard Lapse Rate
+1000 feet
-2*C -1 inHG |
So, ON a Standard day... temperature and pressure at
1000 ft MSL 2000 ft MSL 5000 ft MSL |
at 1000 feet 13*C, 28.92 inHg
at 2000 feet 11*C, 27.92 inHg 5*C, 24.92 inHg |
High Pressure System
An area surrounded by low pressure
Airflow = clockwise, down and out |
Low Pressure System
An area surrounded by high pressure
Airflow = counterclockwise, up and in |
Temperature inversions, 3 causes
Radiation cooling / Terrestrial radiation - ground cools fast
Frontal Activity - CF goes under, WF goes over Mechanical - warm air over cold valley |
Conditions of temperature inversions
Same as for stable air
VIS - Poor Clouds - Stratiform Turbulence - Light to None Icing - RIme Precip - Steady **EXPECT WIND SHEAR THROUGH THE TOP** |
SURAP
(Formation of Fog) |
-Steam
-Upslope -Radiation -Advection -Precipitation Induced |
Steam Fog
-Cold dry air moves over warm water
-Water evaps and rises like smoke -Icing and light turbulence hazard |
Upslope Fog
-Moist warm air blown up a mountain
-Air cools with altitude and condenses -Requires wind to form |
Radiation Fog
-Form on clear, cool, calm and humid nights
-Over low-lying flat ground -Surface cools the air to its dewpoint |
Advection Fog
-Warm moist air moves over a cooler surface
-Surface cools the air to its dewpoint and condenses -Common under cloudy skies along coasts -Requires wind, up to 15 kts ->15kt can force the fog up into stratus clouds |
Precipitation Induced Fog
AKA Frontal Fog |
-All fronts cause precipitation if there's enough moisture
-Warm rain falls through cooler drier air and evaporates -Evaporation cools and saturates the air until it condenses -Very dense fog, usually doesn't clear until the rain stops |
definition of Fog
A low cloud within 50 feet of the surface
2 official preflight sources
(b/c you give tail # or your name and a record is kept) |
FSS/ 1-800-WX-BRIEF
or DUATS |
DUATS
-direct use access terminal service
-computer-based -requires same info as WX brief -gives access to charts/ text based weather -allows pre-flight planning |
Convective Sigmet
(WST) |
*hazards to all a/c
-issued every hour (regardless of activity) *Valid for 2 hours (tornadoes, lines of TS, TS covering large areas) (embedded TS, hail 3/4"+, wind gusts 50+ kts) |
TP legs
upwind
crosswind downwind base final |
TPA
traffic pattern altitude
50 to 60 degrees is which direction?
