What are the four functions of a staff?
1. COORDINATING PLANS, ACTIVITIES, AND OPERATIONS.

2. ADVISING THE COMMANDER IN PROFESSIONAL, TECHNICAL OR FUNCTIONAL AREAS.

3. CONTINUOUSLY COLLECTING, COLLATING, ANALYZING, AND DISSEMINATING INFORMATION GATHERED FROM ALL AVAILABLE RESOURCES.

4. PREPARING PLANS AND ORDERS AND SUPERVISING THE EXECUTION OF ORDERS ISSUED BY, OR IN THE NAME OF, THE COMMANDER.
What does the S1 do?
Responsible for all personnel matters
Supervises medical, legal, safety, and civil affairs
Operates from the CTCP; shares supervision of logistics with the S4,
pay, etc
What does the S2 do?
Besides just being awesome they: Responsible for intelligence (collection and dissemination)
Performs IPB with the CDR
Normally operates from the main CP, personnel & physical security, etc
What does the S3 do?
CDR’s primary assistant in coordinating and planning the battle
Coordinates, plans for, and integrates all BOS assets
Prepares operations estimate and orders, basically everything to do with operations is run by the S3
What does the S4 do?
Determines CSS requirements and priorities
Develops CSS plans in concert with the tactical plan
OIC of the BN Combat Trains
Primary coordinator for the logistical staff
What does the S5 do?
No one really knows since most units don't have one and they didn't even make it into the slide show. (they are the PAO-public affairs office)
What does the S6 do?
Advises the commander and staff on all commo matters including commo maint and EW
Assists S3 in determining locations for CPs
Prepares, writes the signal annex of the OPORD
