Disc brakes resemble the braking system on a _______. Uses brake pads as the friction elements. These pads are squeezed by a caliper to the edge of the rotor.

Bicycle

Disc brakes are ____ resistant to heat fade during high speed or constant stopping, _____ resistant to water fade.

More

Disc Brakes are _____ susceptible to brake pull and automatically adjust as brakes wear

Less

Can be solid or vented in design. Made of cast iron, and withstands wear exceptionally well. Composites are attached to and rotate with the hub.

Rotors

The calipers converts hydraulic pressure into __________ _____. Usually 1 piece of cast iron or aluminum.

Mechanical Force

There is a groove in the caliper housing that seats a square cut seal. The groove is tapered towards the ______ of the cylinder bore to increase the compression on the edge of the seal that is nearest hydraulic pressure.

Bottom

Caliper Pistons Usually made of steel, aluminum, or fiberglass phenolic resin. Top is grooved to accept the dust boot. Can contain _,_,_ cylinders which provide even pressure to the brake pads

1,2,4

Acts as a retracting mechanism for the piston for when the pressure is released. This caused the piston to return to its bore. Adjusts automatically for wear, without allowing fluid to leak.

Hydraulic Seal

Indication of a warped brake rotor. The main cause is improper torque of the wheel.

Pulsating pedal

Usually caused by air in the system. Bleeding may resolve but you should question where the air came from. Check for leaks and proper master cylinder operation

Spongy pedal

Usually an indication of an issue with the brake booster. Can also be caused by a restricted brake line or hose. Feel the rigidity of the hoses and check for kinks or restrictions. May also be caused by frozen caliper or wheel cylinder pistons.

Hard pedal

May be a complaint of the vehicle losing power or excessive fuel consumption. This can generate great amounts of heat and will destroy the brakes. Always look at the parking brake first. Check for sticky or seized pistons or slider pins.

Dragging brakes

Can be caused by contaminated brake linings. Oil or brake fluid may cause this problem. Fix the source of the leak and replace the linings.

Grabbing Brakes

Can be caused by either the brakes or steering/suspension system. Check the tire pressures and tire condition and tire size should be the same on each axle.

Pulling

Wobbling of rotor from side to side when it rotates. Causes pulsation and vibration. Can also cause chatter.

Lateral Runout

Variations in thickness of rotor. Can cause excessive pedal travel, front-end vibration, pedal pulsation, chatter, and grabbing

Lack of parallelism

Caused by brake heat. Best suggestion is to replace rotor

Hot spots

Light scoring of ______in or less is normal wear. Anything more should be replaced
