Unfavorable balance is when you buy more than you sell this is bad because then you are losing money not gaining it, which is bad. Mercantilism was established when England established the Navigational Acts this limited the amount of trade this means that the English only allowed you to trade if the goods were on an English ship. This enabled England to export more than they where importing. This way England had Favorable trade. The Colonists saw the Navigational Acts as the King and Parliament getting involved in what they should not have, but there was some still positives, the colonists will always have someone to trade with (England) and it also increased the amount of shipbuilding in the colonies therefore leading to smuggling. The Colonist saw the Navigational Acts as an intrusion on their rights to free trade.
