The population grew from 800 to 35,000. San Francisco became a busy port. Some people stayed in San Francisco.
Essay 2 Why might a miner who traveled to California seeking gold be "poor in the end"?
The miners had to pay for their passages to California, find and buy tools to work the claim, and pay high living costs. Even if they found gold they might have to spend it all in order to live in California.

Many immigrants faced discrimination or the unfair treatment because of their race, religion, or birthplace. Some miners felt that only people from the US should have the right to find gold. Indians land was destroyed. Violence and crime were very common. Vigilantes often took the law into their own hands and they were few laws and government in place.

The US had to take control of California. General Riley called for the Monterey convention in order to decide on Cali's future.The California Constitution is ratified and California joins the union and becomes the state on Sept. 9, 1850.
