Monks spent most of their day praying and working.
Monks had to devote their entire life to a certain discipline of prayer.
All monks had to take three vows. These vows were the vow of poverty which meant he had to give up all his worldly goods, vow of chastity which meant he had to stay single, and vow of obedience which meant he had to promise to obey the church and the rules of the monastery.
Once someone became a monk they had to be a monk for the rest of their lives.
They sang different prayers throughout the day, which was divided into periods according to a system called the “Canonical hours.”
The purpose of a Medieval monastery was to shelter monks
Medieval monasteries were also farms, inns, hospitals, schools and libraries
A Medieval monastery received pilgrims and travellers, at a period of time when western Europe had almost no inns at all
This monastery performed many works of charity, feeding the hungry, healing the sick who were brought to their doors, and distributing their medicines.
Many monasteries provided education for boys who wished to become priests and those who wanted to lead active lives in the world.
In the early middle ages it was common for children to be donated to a monastery by their parents.
After a while, however, this came to be seen as both unpredictable and inappropriate, and most monks tended to be young adults.
There were some monks who wanted become monks late in their life, and who may have left wives, children, even grandchildren behind them when they became novices.
Any man, rich or poor, noble or peasant could become a Medieval monk.
Everyone who wanted to become a monk had to take the vow of obedience.
Overall Medieval Monks and Monasteries played a big role in the Middle Ages because there weren't as much families in the Middle Ages as there are today because there wasn't as many families since lots of men were monks.
