Active cycle of breathing

Breathing maneuver that combines breathing control, thoracic expansion Control and forced expiration technique

Autogenic drainage

Technique that aims to achieve the highest possible airflow in the different generations of bronchi secretions without forced expirations.

Chest physiotherapy (CPT)

Technique used to help remove mucus and fluid from the lungs conventional CPT consists of postural drainage percussion and vibration

Forced expiratory technique (FET)

Breathing maneuver that consists of one or two forced expirations or Huffs, combined with a period of controlled breathing

High frequency chest wall compression (HFCWC)

Any airway clearance technique that use a vest to compress the chest externally with short, rapid expiratory flow pulses and relies on chest wall elastic recoil to return the lungs to functional residual capacity

high-frequency chest wall oscillation (HFCWO)

An airway clearance technique that uses cuirass to generate biphasic changes in transrespiratory pressure difference

Huff coughing

Forced expiratory techniques (FET) that is performed by sharply exhaling from high to Mid- lung volumes through an open glottis; used for patient unable to generate an effective cough

Incentive spirometry (IS)

Technique designed to mimic natural sighing or yawning maneuvers; also referred to as sustained maximal inspiration; used to reestablish the normal pattern of periodic deep breathing in the post-oprative period

Intermittent positive-pressure breathing (IPPB)

Short term or episodic mechanical ventilation for the primary purpose of assisting ventilation and providing short duration hyperinflation therapy; usually administered with phenomatically driven, pressure- triggered and pressure -cycled ventilators

Intrapulmonary percussive ventilation (IPV)

Therapeutic form of chest physical therapy using a pneumatic device called a percussionator; the patient breathes through a mouthpiece which delivers high-flow mini burst at a rate of over 200 cycles per minute

Mechanical insufflation-exsufflation

Technique in which a device inflates the lungs with positive pressure followed by a negative pressure to simulate a cough

Mini bronchoalveolar lavaga (mini-BAL)

A nonbronchoscopic method of performing a small volume bronchoalveolar lavage for quantitative culture results to guide antibiotic therapy prescribed for patients suspected of ventilator-associated pneumonia

Nasotracheal suctioning

Maneuver used to remove secretions from the lower respiratory tract

Percussion therapy

Technique of rapidly clapping cuffing or striking the external thorax directly over the lung segment being drained, with either cupped hands or a mechanical device

Positive expiratory pressure (PEP)

Airway clearance technique in which the patient exhales against a fixed orifice flow resistor or aid in the movement of secretions into the larger airways

Postural drainage (PD)

Use of positioning and gravity to drain secretions from area of the bronchi and lungs into the trachea

Sputum induction

Method of facilitating the cough up of material from the lungs often through the administration of bland aerosols.

Vibration therapy

Maneuver used as part of conventional chest physiotherapy to assist patients in mobilizing secretions from the lower respiratory tract
