What is performance psychology?

Helping people learn how to perform better and more consistently in endeavours where excellence counts. Psychologists help develop skills and abilities required for excellence, diagnose and prevent inhibitors of excellence, and improve performance environments.

What is sport psychology?

A sub-focus of performance psychology. It consists of 2 distinct service delivery models; performance based interventions and therapeutic based interventions.

Define performance enhancement (performance based).

Helping improve their capability to perform up to their potential by helping them develop the mindset and mental/emotional skills to improve their KSAs or to better execute their KSAs.

Define performance restoration (therapeutic based).

Helping a performer remove barriers to allow them to return to performing at an already established level.

What are performance Issues?

Those that prevent someone’s performance from reachingtheir desired standard of success. Include issues that interfere with the development and execution of knowledge, skills and abilities.

How is performance psychology different to clinical psychology?

Addresses environmental, organisational, and systemic issues (coaches, team dynamics).


Based on theories of performance excellence.


Relies on consulting, teaching and coaching as interventions.


Are involved in the whole programme, not just when things go wrong.

Explain the limit to exercise tolerance in humans.

Exercise tolerance in highly motivated subjects is limited by the perception of effort, rather than muscle fatigue.
