What are the four needs?
Physical needs, identity needs, social needs, practical needs
how does each of them affect our communication?
physical- can affect one's health. Talking about problems/tragedies relieves stress/anxiety.

identity-communication is the major way we learn who we are. -we decide who we are by how others react to us.

social- communication is the principle way relationships are created. - link btwn quality of communication and success of relationship.

practical -communication is the tool that lest us function normally. ex: direct the doctor to "where it hurts"
How have communication models changed over time?
The early 1950 models were simplistic & better for explaining mass communication than interpersonal. Represented a one-way process

-Later- they represented communication like a ping-pong game w/nonverbal/verbal feedback in response.

-now-models are sophisticated & attempts to represent all factors of communication

encoding- putting a meaning in your messages

decoding: taking apart all the meaning in a message
