Bone Files
double ended instrument wiht a rounded working end with serrations. used in a back and forth motion to trim and smooth the bone after a tooth has been extracted.
Dressing Pliers
tweezers of various sizes and designs with pointed beaks. the handle or working end has a good grip.
Elevators
instruments used to raise a tooth from its socket. most commonly used elevators are straight elevators.
Forcepts
have a handle, a neck, and a nib or beak.beak of the tooth-extracting forcepts are designed to grasp tooth with maximum contact on facial-lingual surface of the roots just below the crevix.
Hemostats and Needle Holders
look like scissors with locking joints and serrated beaks. hermostats have long beaks in various straight or curved lengths. needle holders have beak that is rounded and blunt with serrated criss-cross edges
Mouth Props and Mouth Gags
used to keep mouth open while dental procedure is being preformed. they are small, medium, and large pieces of hard rubber. mouth props are also known as bite blocks.
Operating Lights
several types and sizes of operating lights are available. job of dental assistant to adjust the light to keep the surgical field properly lighted.
Retractors
used for holding tissue away from the operating field. three types of retractors: tissue retractors, tongue retractors, and cheek retractors.
Rongeurs
used for nipping uneven or unwanted bone pieces by contouring and shaping the bone after extraction as an aid to proper healing of the alveolar.
Scalpels/Surgical Blades and Blade Removal Device
surgical knives with a disposable or reusable handle. various shapes and sizes. most commonly used blades are #15 for most surgical procedures and blades. #11 and #12 used to incise and drain lesions.
Scissors
tissue scissors have long handle with a serrated blade edge that is used to grasp and hold the tissue during cutting. suture scissors smaller with one curved, half moon blade that is inserted under the suture thread during cutting. bandage scissors are used to cut materials and dressing during surgery.
Surgical Aspirators
suction tips with long handles and narrow tip openings. used to aspirate sockets, deeper throat areas, and surgical sites.
Surgical Burs and Handpieces
similar to dental burs but they are larger in size and are ise to remove bone to expose root tips or to divide teethin preparation for sectioning and removal.
Surgical Chisels and Mallet
longer, thicker, and heavier than regular tooth chisels. they are small, medium, and large blade width-tips.
Surgical Curettes
hand instruments with spoon-shaped face that are inserted in socket or surgical site to remove infectious materials, lesions, and/or debris.
Surgical Preset Trays
hand instruments and other related accessories for a surgicalprocedure can be prepared, stored, and transported together as a preset tray also known as preset cassette.
Suture Needles and Materials
used to close wound or incisions. to suture a wound, suture thread, a suture needle, a needle holder, and suture scissors are required. suture thread can be made of resorbable or non-resorbable material.
