LISTENING
The process of receiving, constructing meaning from, and responding to spoken or nonverbal messages.
HURIER MODEL
A six stage model of the listening process involving hearing*, understanding*, remembering*, interrpreting*, evaluating*, and responding*.
*HEARING
A passive physiological process in which sound is received by the ear.
*UNDERSTANDING
Assigning meaning to the stimuli that have been selected that attended to.
*REMEMBERING
Recalling something from stored memory; thinking of something again.
*INTERPRETING
The process of understanding the meaning of the message from the speaker's point of view and letting the speaker know that you understand.
*EVALUATING
THe listener analyzes evidence sorts facts from opinion, determines the intent of the speaker, judges the accuracy of the speaker's statements and conclusions, and judges the accuracy of his or her own decisions.
