Fukuoka's eight categories of Japanese-ness
pure Japanese (lineage, culture, nationality), first generation migrants (lineage, culture), Japanese raised abroad (lineage, nationality), naturalized Japanese (culture, nationality), 3rd generation emigrants and war orphans abroad (lineage), Zanichi Koreans with Japanese upbringing (culture), ainu (nationality), and non-Japanese
What does Fukuoka based his defo of "japanese-ness" on?
nationality, culture, and lineage
What is wrong with Fukuoka's definition
Fukuoka's system is too simplistic, as he himself admits. Few people would fit perfectly into these groups. Many people are of two different lineages, identify with many different cultures, and choose to change their nationality or hold dual citizenship. Furthermore, his defo. for "Japanese culture" is pretty meaningless because its such a complex, contrasting, and social-constructed term.
