This past tense is used to describe actions that have no known ending, such as:
- stating one's age. (I was 4 years old)
- actions that "set the stage" for another action. (I was eating when he came in)
- actions that were repeated habitually. (we ate together every night)

Present Progressive Tense Explanation

This tense is used to describe an action that is currently in progress. It is the equivalent of adding -ing to an infinitive in english. It is not used for future actions.
