Location/topography/geography
- Duero Valley
- Directly east, upstream of Toro; Duero streaming west.
- Most vineyards around Rueda, 170km northwest of Madrid.
- West of Ribera del Duero.
- Flat plains at 600-780m altitude.
Climate
- Full continental
- But, 2 tributaries of Douro have significant influence.
- But, significant day-night temperature variation; beneficial for aromatics.
Soil
- Iron-rich soils w good drainage; easy to work (plateau)
- Chalk/limestone soils beside the Douro in the north
Grape varieties
- Black: Tinta del País (Tempranillo).
Others: CS, Merlot, Garnacha.
- White: Verdejo, SB.
Others: Viura
Viticulture
- Most new vineyards set up for mechanisation.
- Vines trained low to protect from winds.
- Key hazards: spring frosts, hailstones in winter/spring.
- Verdejo oxidizes easy; generally harvested at night.
Vinification
Whites: night harvest, selection tables, cold maceration, temperature controlled fermentation are common.
--> excluding oxygen at all stages.
Wine styles
White
- Traditionally, sup-Sherry type wine; Vino Generoso. Using Palomino Fino and/or Viura. There are still some flor-influenced wines made.
- Modern wines are made from Verdejo; varietally or blended w SB.
- Elegant, aromatic wines w crisp acidity; peach, melon flavours from SB and Viura.
Wine styles
Red
- Red wines are modernly made; Ribera del Duero style:
- grapes destalked --> fermented
- free-run wine tapped off
- rest pressed
- press-wine added to the free-run wine for final blend.
Scale of production and industry significance
- 7.600 ha
- Most production is white, but red now also authorised.
- Key producer: Vinos Blancos de Castilla (helped by Émile Peynaud)
Legislation
1. Rueda DO: >25% Verdejo
2. Rueda Superior DO: >60% Verdejo
3. Rueda SB DO: 100% SB
History
- 11th: first evidence of winemaking.
- 18th: Verdejo cultivated.
- 1890: Phylloxera destroyed 2/3 of vineyards.
- 1972: Marques de Riscal (Rioja) established here to produce aromatic white wines. --> result 1980 DO.
