What is a gravitational force?

A field of attraction around everything that has a mass.

True or false? The closer to Earth you are the stronger the pull of Earth's gravitation field.

True: Earth's gravitational field gets weaker as you move away from Earth.

True or false? Soil is a non-renewable resource?

True - Soil that is weathered and eroded can take hundreds of years to replace. Because soil is so slow to be replaced it is considered non-renewable.
What is a renewable energy source?
List some renewable resources.
Renewable energy sources are things that can be replaced after being used (usually within one human lifespan)

air/wind, water, sunlight, heat (including geothermal), living things (including plants)

What is a non-renewable energy source?
List some non-renewable resources.

Any source of energy that cannot be replaced after it's use or takes thousands of years to replace.

Coal, oil, gas, rocks, soils, nuclear,
Where does the largest amount of evaporation (86%) of the water come from?
The oceans because they are the largest bodies of water in the world.

What term do we give to the oval-shaped loops in this image?
The oval shapes that shows things like the orbit of moons and planets are called Ellipses.
Why do we say a day is 24 hours long?
The Earth has an imaginary axis (line) running from the North pole to the South pole. It rotates on this axis. It takes 24 hours for the Earth to complete one full rotation, so we call that one day.
What causes night time?
The Earth is a sphere, or ball, which spins round and round as it travels around the Sun. As it spins, one side of the Earth faces the Sun, while the other side faces away into space. The side facing the Sun is bathed in light and heat – we call this daytime. The side facing away from the sun is in darkness. We call this night.
How long does it take for the Earth to orbit the Sun once?
It takes 365 and 1/4 days (We call this one year).
Why do we have a leap year (an extra day on the calendar - February 29) every four years?
Because it takes the Earth 365 and 1/4 days to rotate around the sun, this makes it hard to create a calendar. To get around this, each year is 365 days and then every 4th year we add an extra day to make 366 days.

What is evaporation?

Energy from the sun causes liquid water to become water vapour in the air. Evaporation can occur from oceans, lakes, rivers, the ground, trees and other plants.
What is precipitation?
The scientific name for rain, snow and hail.
What is transpiration?
When water evaporates from trees and other plants.
What happens to precipitation (rain, snow, hail) that falls on land?
Run-Off: It may fall over the surface and move back into rivers, lakes and streams.

Percolation: It may soak into the ground.
What is condensation?
When water vapor starts to turn back into liquid. This is what forms clouds.
What is the difference between a lunar eclipse and a solar eclipse?
A lunar eclipse is where the Earth blocks light from reaching the moon.

A solar eclipse is where the moon blocks the sun's light from reaching the earth.

Solar Eclipse
Name the two models of the universe and explain the main difference between them.
The Geocentric Model was the earlier model and places the Earth at the centre of the universe.

The Heliocentric Model places the sun at the centre of the universe with the Earth and other planets revolving around it.
How does the relationship between the position of the sun and the Earth affect climate?
The areas around the equator always point to the sun. This makes them hot all the time with very little change from season to season. Because Earth spins on a tilted axis, some areas have lots of sunlight concentrated over a smaller area. This is what we called Summer.
Other parts of the earth are pointed away from the sun which spreads the sun over a larger area. This makes the temperature cooler. We call this Winter.
What is an orbit?
Planets, moons and stars have gravitational fields that are sometimes strong enough to trap other objects/masses so they travel continuously around them. The path they travel is called an orbit.
True or False? The amount of water on the Earth is finite (meaning no new water can be made).
True
List some factors that might affect the water cycle?
State of the water (ice, liquid, vapor), air temperature, air movement, humidity, landscape, vegetation and amount of sunlight.
List ways human actions can change the water cycle?
Storing water in dams, using water for irrigation, moving water around, building cities, changing vegetation (e.g. cutting down forests)

What is the difference between a natural satellite and an artificial satellite?
A natural satellite is an object such as the moon orbiting the Earth.

An artificial satellite is an object placed in orbit such as a communication or television satellite.
