What is the range of human hearing? |
20Hz - 20kHz |
What does a DI do? |
Direct Inject. Converts instrument level signal to mic level. |
Why does sound output from a computer need to go through an audio interface? |
To provide balanced outputs and minimise interference. |
What is the difference between passive and active speakers? |
Passive speakers require an external amp, are quieter and allow for optimal matching of amp and speaker. Active speakers have internal amps, often have loud fans and are less customisable. |
Why do you never put vocals in stage monitors for a musical? |
Because the mics are omni-directional, which will cause feedback. |
What are the 4 controls of reverb? |
Wet/Dry Mix, Decay, Pre-delay and Delays. |
How does a speaker work? |
Electricity comes out of an amplifier and physically pushes the speaker diaphragm back and forth. Electrical energy into acoustic energy. |
What is a tweeter? |
High frequency transducer. Smaller, lower wattage, and more directional than woofers. |
What is a woofer? |
Low frequency transducer. Bigger, higher wattage, and less directional than a tweeter. |
What are the uses of a speaker's enclosure? |
Allows for aiming sound, easy rigging and transporting, time alignment of low and high frequencies, phase coherence. |
What does an amplifier do? |
Amplifies the signal coming out of the board so that it is strong enough to move the diaphragm of the speakers. |
What are crossovers? |
Essentially EQ in a speaker box that separates signal into different frequency bands. Uses high pass and low pass filters. |
What is Bheringer gear? |
Crappy, crappy, crappy, crappy, crappy, crappy, crappy. |
Do four speakers pointed outward create a perfectly omnidirectional source? |
No. |
What is a Delay? |
A fill speaker that compensates for the slow speed of sound. Minimises comb filtering. |
What should mic capsules be considered? |
Consumables. |
How many points of control does Parametric EQ have? |
3 |
How many points of control does semi-parametric EQ have? |
2 |
What does Bell EQ do? |
Boosts/Attenuates a frequency and those a bit to each side of it. |
What does High Shelf EQ do? |
Boosts/Attenuates a frequency and every frequency above it to the same level. |
What does Low Shelf EQ do? |
Boosts/Attenuates a frequency and every frequency below it to the same level. |
What does Low Pass EQ do? |
Cuts high frequencies. |
What does High Pass EQ do? |
Cuts low frequencies. |
What is precedence effect? |
When your brain hears two sounds that are within 50-52 milliseconds of each other it just hears them as a single sound. Also known as Haas effect. |
