COMPRESSION WAVE
A sound wave. Is made up of compressinos and rarefactions
Transverse Wave
A light wave; includes crest, teough, wavelength, etc.
Vibration
the back and forth movement of matter. It causes sound
Sound
a form of energy that travels through matter in waves; it is caused by vibrations
Crest/Peak
It represents the compressions of a sound wave; it's the highest point of a wave.
Trough
It represents the refraction of a wave; the lowest point of a wave.
Wavelenghth
The distance from one compression or crest to the next.
Frequency
The number of vibrations that are produced in a given unit of time; it determines pitch.
Compression
Part of the sound wave where the molecules are packed close together.
Refraction
Part of the sound wave where the molecules are spread apart.
Sonar (sound navigation and ranging)
Process that uses sound waves to locate objects-Ships, Planes, Weater.
Echolocation
Process in which animals (bats) send out sound waves in order to find food.
Medium
The material that sound waves travel through (ex: air, water).
Pitch
The highness or loweness of a sound; it is determined by the frequency of a vibrating object.
