Who is Eddie Mabo and what is he famous for?
Eddie Mabo is the first Indigenous person to argue to the courts his land was nto Terra Nullius. His case won after many years in court.
What is Terra Nullius?
Terra Nullius means 'no mans land'.
How many languages were there and how many groups?
Around 500 languages and 2 groups 'Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.'
What is the difference between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders?
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are completeley different in there culture and world views.
How did the aboriginals survive?
The woman gathered such as fish and berries. The men hunted food such as kangaroo and possums.
When did the first fleet arrive? Were and with who?
The first fleet arrived on the 26th Janurary 1788 in Port Jackson with Captain Arthur Phillip
What was the reaction of the Indigenous people at first contact?
The Indigenous people thought the first Europeans might have been ghosts or evil spirts.

Most Europeans thought the Indigenous people were noble Savages.

Government service Convicts were forced by the Government to do heavy labour. e.g building roads

Convicts who completed the full term of there sentence.
What were Emancipists?
Convicts who were behaved so well that they were pardoned ahead of time.
What were Ticket of leave Convicts?
Well behaved convicts who were alloud to work for themselves for wages.

What are Female Factories?
Woman who were ugly, old, insane or pregnant usually ended up in a female factory were they were cared for in exchange for labour.
When was Australia claimed for the British Monarchy?
Captain Cook planted the British flag when he claimed the East Coast of Australia as part of the British Empire in 1770.
Who was Captain Arthur Phillip?
Captain Arthur Phillip was the first Governer of Australia. He also captained the first fleet.
What is Dreaming?
Dreaming is information that describes the Dreamtime explains Aboriginal people's relationship to the land and sets out their traditional rules of behaviour.
What is the Dreamtime?
A name given to describe the time in Aboriginal belief when the world and everything in it was created.
Why was there many conflicts between European and Indigenous people?
There were many conflicts because the two groups spoke different languages and because they had two completely different world views
Why is indigenous artwork so important?
Because the paintings tell visual stories about the land - mostly about places created by ancestral beings in the dreamtime
What is sovereignty?
Sovereignty descirbes a situation where one has authority over something e.g. Land
What is crown land?
land belonging to the government - Everyone one on that land is under "British Law", The crown.
What is Native Title?
A "Bundle of Rights" that may include the right to hunt fish and conduct ceremomies and to be consulted about future development. The law to allow people to continue what they did when they lived there.
What are Torres Strait Islanders?
A group of indigenous people coming from the islands above Queensland.
What is a commodity?
Something that can be bought and sold.
What are causes of death?
When the Europeans arrived in Australia in 1788, they brought many diseases with them, Including: Smallpox and Scurvy.
