Solid Waste
"any garbage, refuse, sludge, from a waste treatment plant, water supply treatment plant, or air pollution control facility and other discarded material, including soil, liquid, semisolid, or contained gaseous material resulting from industrial, commercial, mining, and agricultural operations and from community activities
Methods of solid waste disposal(7)
1. Open/Land disposal=dumping waste on ground

2. Disposal at sea= waste placed on barges away from city

3. Hog feeding= waste is drained and heated to 137 degrees, then fed to hogs

4. Sanitary landfills

5. Source reduction= reduces waste's toxicty before entering waste stream

6. Recycling= reduces waste

7. Incinerators= burning of solid waste; reduces volume of waste; air pollution laws make it impractical
Sanitary landfills
-Most common type of waste disposal.
-prevents breeding and contains odor

Location
-must not be located on floodplain, near airports, or on wetlands

Design
-protect ground water, wetlands, and floodplains
-prevent surface ponding
-vent explosive gases
-restricted access

Not secure
-burrowing animals
-roots of vegetation
-uneven settling
-migration of chemicals or objects

Shortcomings
-many do not meet federal standards
-insufficient cover
-ponding
Hazardous waste
"solid waste or combination of solid wastes, which may:
1. cause, or increase moratlity or irreversible/incapacitating illness
2. pose a present or potential hazard to human health or the environment when improperly treated, stored, transported, or dispoed of.

Types of waste
-solvents, acid/bases, sludge, paints, heavy metals

Harzadous waste producers
-chemical manufacturers
-maintenance shops
-construction industries
Characteristics of Hazardous Waste(4)
1. Toxicity= potentially poisonous to humans

2. Ignitability=solvents, oils, paints, and plastics

3. Corrosivity= pH < 2, above12.5
ex. cleaning agents and battery residue

4. Reactivity= may explode and generate toxic gas; chemical waste
HAZARDOUS WASTE INCIDENTS
Louisville, KY
-rural site, 17,000 drums of toxin; dead property owner pocketed money

Iberville Parish, LA
-truck driver dumped hazmat into waste pit
-chemicals reacted, leading to driver's death

Montague, MI
-illegal dumpong of VOCs
-uncovered by whistle blower at chemical company

Seymour, IN
-60,000 drums of hazardous waste were improperly dumped
-Hydrogen gas reacted with solvents
-water emergencies, evacuations
INCIDENT AT TIMES BEACH
-oils on dust roads
-horses, animals affected miscarriages
-EPA discovered in 1982
-Entire town evacuated in 1985
LOVE CANAL, NY
-Hooker Chemical Company had a big plant there,
-dumped 21,000 tons of waste from 1942 to1953
-Homes were infected with chemicals
182 million dollars in cleanup, relocation, investigation
Health effects= skin sores, epilepsy, rectal bleeding, miscarriages, liver problems
