ROTATION
Means to rotate on an axis, which on Earth takes 24 hours. (Causes day and night.)
memory trick: rotate and axis both contain an "a". |
REVOLUTION
Means to orbit/revolve around the sun, which on Earth takes 365 1/4 days.
AXIS
The imaginary line through both poles of a planet.
SUN
A giant star at the center of our solar system. It is the nearest star to Earth.
SOLAR SYSTEM
A sun and the planets/objects that revolve around it.
Our solar system: 1 star, 8 planets, and 5 dwarf planets. |
GALAXY
A group of solar systems connected by a common gravity. Ours is the Milky Way.
GALACTIC YEAR
The time it takes for the sun to orbit around the center of the galaxy - about once every 250 million years.
MOON PHASES
Caused by reflecting sunlight as the moon circles Earth. Even though the moon looks different from day to day as it orbits Earth, it really doesn't change.
INNER PLANETS
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars
*the rocky planets *terrestrial (means land) planets *small/dense - limited in size (Mercury/smallest, Earth/largest) |
OUTER PLANETS
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
*the gas giants - not solid surfaces *low densities - much larger than the inner planets *all have rings, moons and are extremely cold! |
DWARF PLANETS
There are 5: Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, Eris
* Small bodies in orbit around the sun that have nearly round shapes. |
SEASONS
The Earth's axis is tilted at 23.5 as it revolves around the sun. Our part of the Earth is tilted toward the sun during our summer.
*There would be no seasons and the temperature would remain constant (same) if the Earth's axis had no tilt. |
ORDER OF PLANETS FROM THE SUN
MERCURY, VENUS, EARTH, MARS,
(MY VERY EXCELLENT MOTHER) JUPITER, SATURN, URANUS, NEPTUNE (JUST SERVED US NOODLES) |
ORDER OF PLANETS FROM SMALLEST TO LARGEST
MERCURY, MARS, VENUS, EARTH, NEPTUNE, URANUS, SATURN, JUPITER
