Example- democracy is reinforced through norms governing respect for the flag and treatment of elected officals
Sanctions
Rewards or punishments used to enforce conformity norms

Example-praise for good behavior or grounded for bad behavior
Deviance
behavior that violates significant social norms

Example- attacking a person with a weapon
Socialization
interactive process through which individuals learn the basic skills, values, beliefs, and behavior patterns of society.

Example- learning right and wrong from your parents
Sterotyping
Oversimplified, exaggerated or unfavorable generalization about a category of people

Example- all aferican americans are lazy or natural athletes
Social Stratification
Ranking of individuals or catagories of people on the basis of unequal access to scarce resources and social rewards

Example- the caste system

Minorities
Category of people who share physical characteristics or cultural practices that result in the group being denied equal treatment

Marriage with multiple partners

Patrilineal
Kinship is only traced through the fathers side of the family
Ideology
system of beliefs or ideas that justifies some social, moral, religious, political, or economic intrests held by a social group or society

Propaganda
organized and deliberate attempt to shape public opinion

Example- using the plain folks appeal to say the public by appealing to the average american
Zero Population Growth
Point at which nearly equal birth and death rates produce a growth rate of zero

Occurs when large numbers of people locate themselves in the same geographic location.

This produces congestion, differences in people(attitudes,races,backrounds,income), people conflicts, more houses businesses and people
Demography
The study of population and population movement as the population grows and people change
Gentrification
process trying to put young upwardly mobile families living in the central cities

selling a house cheap with stipulations to make the housing values go up
Sociology
science that studies human society and social behavior
