Different Types of Function

(list, describe, and give examples of each)

Manifest: intended functions

Latent: unintended functions

Ex. Education System

Social Construction of Reality

(list and describe the 3 stages, run one example through the three stages)

1. Social grouping is exposed to a phenomena

-General Agreement

2. Objectivation: the agreement reached in stage one becomes a social object (norm/law)

3. Internalization: future generations are brought up with this social object, but are unaware of why we have it. (typically by now the origin is forgotten)

Ex. Tylenol Murders

Meads "Development of Self" Theory

(list and describe the 3 stages)

Stage One: Imitative stage; in infancy when a child mimics or imitates symbols

Stage Two: Play stage; when a child begins to attach meanings to the symbols. They also become aware of how they're viewed by a significant other.

Stage Three: Game stage; when a person becomes skilled in the use of language. They are now able to see themselves as many others view them.

Durkheim Study on Suicide

(list, describe and give examples of the four types)

Four types based on motivation:

1. Altruistic: when someone sacrifices their life for another cause/person (ex. terrorist attacks).

2. Fatalistic: when someone is trapped in a miserable situation and sees no way out (ex. slaves in the US)

3. Egoistic: suicide motivated by anger or revenge (ex. most murder-suicides are egoistic).

4. Anomic: when someone feels normless, as though they have no purpose (ex. occurs a lot with depression and despair).

The Looking Glass Self

(go through three stages, give an example)

Stage One: You put yourself in the mind of someone else and imagine how you appear to them.

Stage Two: Imagine how that person judges you based on what they see.

Stage Three: Return to your own mind and determine if you're projecting the image you want, if not change it.

This is typically a subconscious act.

The World System Theory

(list and describe components)

Components:

1. Core nations are highly industrialized and powerful nations.

2. Periphery nations are poor and economically dependent upon the core nations.

3. Semi-periphery nations are emerging out of the periphery of the world.

This theory sees development and change as a contest of power between industrialized and less developed nations.
