racialized groups

groups of people that are singled out for unequal treatment on the basis of real or imagined physical characteristics

ethnicity

a collectivity of people with shared cultural traits, including language, religion or ancestry

ethnic chauvinism

hostility directed toward people on the basis of their membership in a particular ethnic group

racism

hostility directed toward those with real or perceived physiological traits, most centrally skin color

islamaphobia

assimilationism

a theory proposing that particular racial or ethnic groups will cease to be disadvantaged once they integrate into the dominant group

feminism

a term that broadly describes the belief in the social, political and economic equality of the sexes, as well as the various social movements organized around this belief

heterosexism

the ideology that heterosexual sex within a state-sanctioned marriage; primarily for the purpose of reproduction; is normal, while all other forms of sexual behavior are deviant

radical feminism

a theory that sees gender inequality as rooted in patriarchy, or the power men hold over women in society

patriarchy

in radical feminist analysis, a social system characterized by male dominance and female subordination, with men in control of the political, economic, and ideological spheres. the term is also used more generally to mean and society where males as a category have social advantages over women (for example, access to better jobs or higher wages)

socialist feminism

a theory that attempts to explain gender inequality by combining insights from both radical feminism and Marxism. in this framework, power is linked to both gender and class

the harmonization of policies and regulations between Canada and the United States in the interest of the corporate sectors of these countries

populism

a political orientation that presents itself as a movement of the "little guy" opposing big government and big business. there are left and right wing variants of populist movements
