There are many kids who are simply not 'good at school'. This is due to a variety of reasons.

- English might not be their first language.

- Not particularly academic.

- Parents who have low education so they can't help their children with things like homework.

- Parents may not have interest in reading or learning.

What is the meaning of cultural deprivation?

Some schools stream students which means students are placed in an ability band for all lessons.

Some schools set students which means students are placed in an ability band for specific lessons such as English or Maths.

What is social status?

A child's family may be poor and so they can't afford the things that make a student successful in education such as books, equipment, uniform or a secluded area for studying.

What is material deprecation?

Some adults are financially successful without having been successful at school. Some people have good jobs that don't require education or qualifications. This can lead to some people not to value school or education at all. They simply don't see the point.

What is parental values?

This is when a teacher stereotypes a student because of their social status, ethnic background or their peers. This affects the students individual attention from the teachers so they don't reach their full potential because of the teacher limiting their abilities. Being labelled is like a double edged sword. It can restrict your abilities or make you reach your full potential.

What is labelling?

It is a group of people (students) who go against the norms and values which have been set by the school which you need to abide by. They do this in order to gaine respect and higher status amongst their group. Students join these sub cultures because of either peer pressure or to have a laugh and enjoy school without doing any work.

What is a anti school sub-culture?

School uses and expects students to use middle class forms of English, in the class room and the text books and exams then students who don't use that form of speech have a disadvantage compared to others who do.

What are speech patterns?

Poorer children aspire to and are pushed towards manual labour jobs that require no qualifications by parents and teachers so they don't try hard in school and perhaps misbehave rather than study.

What is role allocation?

The economy requires a certain amount of failures so unqualified people carry out low paid work so schools and exams are designed to benefit middle class students and working class students therefor fail.

What is the job market?

Setting in classes and other ways that the curriculum is run are unhelpful to certain students as they believe that school has nothing to offer them.

What is The Curriculum?
