anomie

Inconsistencies that arise when people are taught to strive for certain goals but are not provided with the culturally approved means necessary to attain those goals.

Anomie theory

The theory stating that inconsistencies and contradictions in the social system contribute to many forms of crime.

Crime

An act that violates a criminal code enacted by an officially constituted political authority.

Cultural transmission theories

The theories that posit that crime and delinquency are and culturally transmitted through socialization.

Differential association theory

The theory that posits that crime and delinquency are learned in interaction with other people, for the most part within intimate primary groups such as families and peer groups.

Labeling theory

The theory based on the idea that whether other people define or label a person as deviant.

Primary deviance

The violation of social norms in which the violater is not caught or is excused rather than labeled as a deviant.

Prison - industrial complex

People who see prisons being built as a good thing. More inmates means more jobs.

Recidivism

The repeat of an offense after having been convicted of a crime. "Reoffending"

Secondary deviance

Behavior that a person adopts in reaction to being labeled as a deviant.
