tendency to over predict an outcome after knowing that it occured
e.g. able to see who would win the presidential election after knowing who does then we are able to make up reasons for why they did
name the three different types of methods used to study in psychology
observational method, correlational method, and experimental method
what is the diffusion of responsibility
it is putting the responsibility on someone else example the lady being murdered and several neighbors heard her scream for help but no one had called the police b/c they thought someone else had
oservational method
the method whereas the researcher observes the people & records impressions used to describe a situation
interjudge reliability
level of two or more people who independately observe and code a set of data; by showing that two or more judges independently come up with the same observations
Correlational method
the technique whereaby two or more vaiables are systematically measured and the relationship between them
correlation coeffiencient
how well you can predict one variable form another
surveys
research in which a representative sample of people are asked questions about their attitudes or behaviors
random selection
way of ensuring that a sample of people is representative of a population by giving everyone in the population an equal chance of being selected for the sample
experimental method
the method in which the researcher randomly assigns participants to different conditions and ensures that these conditions are identical
internal validity vs external validity
internal validity is making sure that nothing else besides the indepedant vairable can affect the dependent value
external validity is the results of a study can be generalized to other situations and to other people
cover story
a description given to the participants that is different from its true purpose used to maintain psychological realism
field experiments
researchers study behaviors outside of the laboratory in its natual setting
meta analysis
a stastical technique that averages the results of two or more studies to see if the effefct of an independent variable is relaible
appled research
studies designed to solve a particular social problem
what is natural selection
traits that promote survival in a particualr environemnt are passed along to future generations because organisms withthat trait are more likely to produce offspring
