UNITARY SYSTEM

One central/national government has all the power. State and local level are told what to do and must conply

FEDERAL SYSTEM

Power is divided between national and state level governments. Citizens are subject to both national and state laws

Federal is split between more than one person

CONFEDERATION

Voluntary, non-binding, government formed for a specific purpose. Regional governments still maintain and run their own country. Central authority has less power than regional authority.
