What was the French and Indian War?

It was the war between the British and the French allied with the Native Americans. They were fighting over the Ohio River Valley.

Who was George Washington and what did he do?

He was chosen as a leader for a militia force that was going to ask the french to leave. After the French refused, Washington traveled west again and built a fort called Fort Necessity. Washingtons troops then attacked and defeated a small french army, but larger forces came and forced Washington to surrender.

What is a militia?

Militia is a force made up of civilians trained as soldiers, but not part of the regular army.

What is an alliance?

An alliance is an agreement between countries to help each other against other countries.

What was the Albany Plan of Union?

It called for a council of representatives elected by the colonial assemblies. The council would have authority over western settlements, relations with Native Americans, and other urgent matters. It was a proposal that the colonies should have a unified government.

What was the Albany Congress?

A meeting of representatives sent by the legislatures of the northern seven of the thirteen colonies.

Who was General Edward Braddock?

He was the general sent to Virginia with orders to capture Fort Duquesne.

Why was General Edward Braddock unsuccesful? When did he try to take Fort Duquesne?

Because he only understood the military tactics used in Europe, which were very different from the ones used in the colonies. That is why they were ambushed near Fort Duquesne. It happened in 1755.

What other setbacks did the British have?

In 1755, an army led by the governor of Massachusetts failed to take Fort Niagra on Lake Ontario. Another army of British colonists and Native Americans were ambushed near Lake George. In 1757 General Louis de Montcalm captured Fort William Henry on Lake George.

When did England declare war on France?

May, 1756.

What did this mark the beginning of?

The Seven Year War.

Who was William Pitt and when did he come to power?

In 1757 William Pitt became the Prime Minister of England. He wanted top generals with real military talent.

What happened in 1758?

Britain captured the fort at Louisbourg and Fort Duquesne.

What happened in 1759?

The British took Quebec.

What is the Treaty of Paris?

It said that France lost almost all of its North American possessions.

What does ceded mean?

Surrendered.
