In 1947, British India was divided along religious lines.
Eventually the countries of Pakistan and Bangladesh were formed as a Hindu country. Both India and Pakistan claimed an area called Kashmir. The people of Kashmir wanted to align with Pakistan. The leaders of Kashmir wanted to join India. India and Pakistan continue to dispute control of Kashmir, in part because of its supply of water for drinking and farming.
