Magna Carta
The Magna Carta was the first document to place restrictions on the English ruler's power. In 1215 it bumped King John of the throne.
Parliament
Parliament was a two house legislator. It was were they made all of the laws. There greatest power was the right to approve new taxes.
English Bill of Rights
The English Bill of Rights boosted the Parliamentary power. It bumped King Charles II off the throne and invited is daughter Mary and her husband William to rule. Then later Mary and William signed the English Bill of Rights.
Legislature
A group of people who have the power to make laws. Part of a government that makes laws.
Bill of Rights
A written list of freedoms that the government promises to protect.
Habeas Corpus
A principle that person cannot be held in prison without being charged with a specific crime.
Levy
To impose, to force to be paid.
Who couldn't vote?
Women, Native Americans and Africans.
Who could vote?
White males that owned land and had to be a colonist.
Freedom of the Press
The right of journalists to publish the truth without restriction or penalty.
John Peter Zenger
He was accused of libel because he published the things that criticized the government but he was not found guilty.The case later helped establish the fundamental principle.
Navigation Acts
It supported mercantilism, the rules were that all of the ships had to be from England, and they had to be sent to England before anywhere else.
