The Guiana highlands are in Southern Venezuala. They stretch across the northern part of Brazil, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. The Guiana highlands are ancient and eroded.

Tepuis (accent over i) are a chain of high plateaus in the Guiana Highlands.

They extend inland along Brazil's southeastern coast. They are ancient and eroded.

The Llanos are a large plains area in Northeastern Columbia and Venezuela.
What is the Gran Chaco?
The Gran Chaco is located between the Andes and the Brazilian Highlands. Gran Chaco means "hunting land," and hunting is still a popular pastime in this area. REALLY FLAT!

The Pampas are located farther south of the Gran Chaco. These are grasslands. There is fertile soil in the Pampas caused by erosion from both wind and water. Eastern edge of Pampas- most densely populated.

Where does the Orinoco River drain to?
The atlantic ocean. It drains the western Guiana Highlands and the Llanos.

It stretches across 60 degrees of latitude! This leads to many different climate regions. (Note to readers: Amazon River Basin is VERY RAINY! It has more than 150 inches of rainfall each year!)

A tree line is a line of elevation above which trees do not grow.
Where is the Atacama desert?
It is located in Northern Chile and Southern Peru.
What is special about the Atacama desert?
The Atacama desert is one of the foggiest and driest places on earth. The reason for the fog is that the cold weather from Antarctica being swept in by the Peru current clashing with the hot and dry weather from the Atacama desert condenses into fog. To get drinking water, people simply lay out nets and the hot weather causes the fog droplets to condense onto the net and drop into buckets. This produces gallons and gallons of drinking water each day!
Where have new gold and silver deposits been found?
In Brazil and Colombia.
Where is the largest oil reserve?
Venezuela.
What are tar sands?
Tar sands are rock or sand layers that contain oil. However, because the oil has to be cooked out of the rocks, production is expensive. However, when easily pumped oil is gone, tar sands will become more important.
