Assimilate
to bring into conformity with the customs, attitudes, etc., of a group, nation, or the like; adapt or adjust
Collective Rights
Rights that are given to only specific groups, NOT individuals, in Canada.
Consititution
the system of fundamental principles according to which a nation, state, corporation, or the like, is governed (BNA Act, Indian Act).
Charter of Rights and Freedoms
The document that all persons born in Canada are protected under, as well as groups of people, such as Francophones and First Nations
Francophone
A French speaking person.
Anglophone
An English speaking person.
First Nations
A group that is protected under the Charter of Rights, and that help found Canada; used to have full run of the country before the white man put them on reserves with specific Rights and Freedoms.
Metis
First Nations and White man crossed.
The Numbered Treaties
Treaties that allowed the First Nations rights, such as land.
Collective Identity
Refers to the individuals' sense of belonging to a group of people.
The Indian Act
A legal document and a set of laws that was first passed by the Canadian Government in 1876 and is still enforced today; gives the Government complete control over the lives of First Nations.
Residential Schools
Like boarding schools, but way worse. Couldn't see your family on holidays, abuse (sexual, physical, emotional) was constant, only for First Nations, severe punishment for talking your native tongue, and were only taking Native American children. No white children allowed.
Reserves
Plots of land set aside for the First Nations to live on, instead of living in towns or cities.
