Cause: Natural- hurricanes (waves and salt water intrusion= kills fresh water plants that hold dirt); subsidence- the sinking or settling of land as it compacts= loose dirt erodes faster
manmade- levees prevent the land from building backup; oil companies dug canals which allow salt water intrusion
severance tax- money paid by industries to La every time they remove a natural resource. Oil companies pay 12.5% severance tax= billions of dollars that go toward fixing our coastline.

all industries use natural (environmentally made) resources
Natural Resources (renewable and nonrenewable)
Natural resource- a gift of "nature" which may include air, water, and soil, which may be a need in an economic way
renewable-replenishes itself over time as quickly as we use it (plants, animals, water)
nonrenewable- not replenished after it is extracted from nature (during our lifetime) (oil, natural gas, lignite, salt, sulfur)
Economic questions and types of economies
questions- what to produce? how to produce? How much to produce? For whom to produce?
Types f economies
Traditional- follow the custom and answer the questions the way it was done before
command- government answers all questions
market- individuals answer the questions based on supply and demand
Poverty(definition, cycle, education as a way out)
*main reason is Louisiana's history of slavery
poverty- to be poor; enough money to get by
cycle- family is below poverty line, has to drop out of school to support family, cant get a good job because of lack of education
*have to get a good education to get a good job
