Explain the premise of Solomon Asch's experiment.
The premise of the experiment was to test participants on group conformity. College students were recruited to participate in a perceptual experiment, in which the participant is asked to verbalize of all the lines presented to them, and to determine which one closest resembles the control option. The true nature of the experiment was to test participants on group conformity. Everyone in the group, except for the participant, was told to answer the wrong answer. The answer is obviously clear to anyone looking at the lines. But the test actually measures how willing is the participant in going along with group pressure, especially when everyone in the group gave the wrong answer.
What was Solomon Asch's initial hypothesis ?
He believed that because the answer was so obvious that there was no need for anyone to conform to group pressure. The results indicated that participants still conformed to the group's wrong answer despite knowing that the answer was obviously wrong.
What percentage of the participants in Asch's experiment succumbed to group pressure ?
35%
What are the reasons Asch think people chose to conform in the experiment
1. to be correct
2. be in good grace with the group
What did most of the participants in Asch's experiment say was their goals in conforming ?
the desire to be correct
What did Gregory Berns do in relationship to Asch's experiment?
He followup to Asch's experiment by performing fMRI to see how participant's brain look under MRI.
What did Gregory Bern find out about the participants in the group conformity experiment ?
The those that resisted peer pressure showed a great deal of activity in the amygdala portion of the brain. This area is primarily associated with pain and discomfort. It showed that going against a group is painful and emotionally discomforting.
True or False?
Many of the experiments in group pressure put constraints against individuality.
False. Many left participants to follow their own individuality..
