What is a social problem?

A phenomenon regarded as bad or undesirable by a significant number of people or a number of significant people who mobilize to eliminate it.

What is the conflict theory and who is the founder of it?
|
Power is the ability to influence the social structure. Karl Marx was the founder. An example would be laws over drugs.

What is social construction-ism?
|
Derived from symbolic interaction-ism, social problems are socially constructed and do not necessarily correspond to objective facts.

What is critical construction-ism?
|
Combines social construction-ism with conflict theory. It is the way problems are constructed reflect the interests of those in power and not objective reality.

What is altruism?
|
It is a self sacrificing behavior. Evolution favors an altruistic gene.

What does a libertarian believe?
|
The highest value is freedom. If they could, they would put an end to all laws. They are conservative on government issues, they'd like to keep the government out.

What does a conservative believe?
|
Human nature is faulty and no perfect system can be devised. The government is there for protection.The government should not control institutions such as businesses, families, and education.

What is a social democrat?
|
Equality, positive role of government, government should play primary role in promoting justice and equality. The biggest social concern is poverty.

|
Agitation. Everyones problem. Power: to get your message across. Competition: others trying to change norms.

|
Legitimation and cooptation= original group absorbed or phased out. Legit=official recognition=power.

Bureaucratization and reaction.

Reemergence. Cycles begin again.

|
Rural= mechanical solidarity. They behave similarly because of similar religions and backgrounds. Urban= organic solidarity. Everyone comes from a different background.

What is anomie?
|
Normlessness.

What is alienation?
|
"Out of control". Or feeling out of control which is subjective. Job dissatisfaction.

What is rationalization?
|
Process where traditional, casual, and spontaneous methods are replaced by formal and carefully calculated methods.

What is social stratification?
|
When some categories of people have more access to societies resources than others.

What is a caste?
|
Ascribed, based on birth. Closed, for life. Endogamous, cannot marry out. Ex. Apartheid (white vs. black in South Africa)

What is a class?
|
Achieved, behavior. Open, can move up or down. Exogamous, you can marry up or down. Ex. United States.

What is absolute poverty?
|
Physical. Having an income that does not allow one to buy basic necessities of life to survive.

What is relative poverty?
|
Social and psychological. Being unable to afford a standard of living considered normal in society.
