Weber- Verstehen

need empathetic understanding /can only understand social structures if we understand individual motives

Weber’s 4 motives for action:


Traditional social action

activity done as the result of traditions or customs e.g. Sunday dinner

Affective social action

emotional action- acting impulsively e.g. crying at a funeral

Rational social action with values

guided by ideology or collective ethics e.g. religion

Rational-instrumental social action

actions to achieve a specific result e.g. studying for an exam in order to get into university

Labelling theory:


Lemert (1951)

argues that after someone carries out a deviant act (primary deviance) the reaction of others can lead to further secondary deviance
