Age
Biologically, age is the number of years since a person was born. Sociologically, it also involves cultural definitions about what is required from and appropriate for people of different ages. These definitions vary from one society to another.
Age Discrimination
The denial of rights, opportunities, and services to someone exclusively because of that person's age.
Age Grading
The process of classifying people into social categories according to age.
Ageism
A system of negative evaluations of people based upon their age. Ageism is most commonly applied to the elderly.
Age Structure
The number of people in a society at each stage of the life course.
Aging
The process of moving through the life course, from birth to death.
Birth Cohort
A category of people who were born in the same year or in a small number of consecutive years.
Generation Units
Groups within the same generation that respond to their common historical experiences in markedly different ways and come to have distinctly different views from one another.
Identity
The sense of who one is and where one is going, involving a sense of continuity about one's past, present, and future.
Life Course
The socially defined sequence of stages in a human life, from birth to death.
Rites of Passage
Public ceremonies that celebrate and record the transition from one age status to another.
Transitional Status
A status that is not permanent, but changes over time. Age is a transitional status because people periodically move from one age category into another.
