Peter Stuyvesant
Peter Stuyvesant became governor of New Netherland in 1647. In 1664 Stuyvesant surrendered, and England took over the colony.
King Charles II
Wanted England to control the Atlantic coast of North America. He told his brother James, the Duke of York, that he could have all of New Netherland if he could take it over.
How did the English gain New Netherland?
By sending warships led by the Duke of York to take over.
William Penn
King Charles II owed money to the father of William Penn, an English Quaker. The king gave Penn a charter, or approval to start a colony. He named his colony Pennsylvania. Penn also became the proprietor of the Delaware Colony.

Penn wanted to make his colonies places where people of different religions could live together peacefully. He also wanted to treat Native Americans fairly.

The Duke of York split New Netherland into two parts, named New York and New Jersey.

The Duke of York split New Netherland into two parts, named New York and New Jersey. He gave control of New Jersey to his friends, John Berkeley and George Carteret.

Many of the early settlers who came to New Jersey were members of a religious group known as Quakers
Pennsylvania
In 1682, Penn wrote The Frame of Government of Pennsylvania. It set up a legislature for the colony. It gave people freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and the right to a trial by jury. Trial by jury means that people accused of crimes will have their case decided by a group of citizens.
Philadelphia
The busiest port. The city was built along the Delaware River. Farmers, merchants, and traders in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware all relied on that Philadelphia port. From Philadelphia, ships sailed down the Delaware River into Delaware Bay and then across the Atlantic Ocean.

Penn also became the proprietor of the Delaware Colony.
What was the Great Awakening
In the 1720s, a new religious movement began in the Middle Colonies. This movement was called the Great Awakening because it “awakened,” or renewed, many people’s interest in religion. It quickly spread throughout the English colonies.
The Breadbasket Colonies
In fact, farmers in the Middle Colonies grew so many crops used in making bread that the Middle Colonies came to be called the “breadbasket” colonies.
