King Henry VIII

Why was the Mayflower Compact important?
|
Gave those who signed it the right to govern themselves. At a time when monarchs ruled, self-government was a very new idea.
The Mayflower Compact also included the idea of majority rule. If more than half the people agreed to a law or a decision, everyone had to follow it. |

Tisquantum, or Squanto
|
Tisquantum showed the Pilgrims where to fish and how to plant squash, corn, and pumpkins. He also helped the colonists trade for furs from neighboring tribes.

Why did the relationship between the Native Americans and the colonists change?
|
After 1630, other English colonists began to settle in different areas of New England. Life there began to change. Many of the new colonists were not friendly toward the Native Americans and settled on more of their lands.
