social problems
aspect of society that people want changed (or are concerned about); not perceived as problem to everyone; sufficient concern to want problem changed; used sociological imagination to look at what people are concerned about
objective condition
what is the social phenomena experience; can be measured; results in subjective concern; ie how many people favor selective abortions of girls
subjective concern
level of distress/awareness asscoiated with objective condition; ie wanting to change selective abortions
society
relatively self sufficient group of people who live within geographic boundaries and pass a complex way of living from one generation to another
culture
complex way of living passed from one generation to another; consists of 3 things being passed- values, norms and roles
passed thru process refered to as socialization which is process thru which we learn expectations of society

symbolic interactionism
focus on symbols-- refer to things that stand for or indicate something else; process thru which we acquire symbols and use these to influence behavior; done thru interacting with others; tries to decipher how humans can give meaning to symbols; development of mind- allows us to decode symbols; focuses on how symbols are used to communicate with and influence the behavior of others
macrosociology
looks at groups of people; refer to this repetitiveness of groups as social structure; assuptions that make up macro:
- 1. systematic part- repetitive- parts/ social structure
- 2. parts are interdependent- changes in one changes other parts
-3. continually rearranging to create stability and equilibrium

Situational group violence
spontaneous ,unplanned use of force that results in injury to people or destruction of property; ie bar fight
organizational group violence
groups of people who plan on using force to injure people and destroy property in an unauthorized way; ie terrorists, school shootings
institutional group violence
planned acts of forces meant to injure people and destroy property; planned and intentionally carried out; they have the right to injure people up to and including killing; includes SWAT and law enforcement
murder
when you kill someone you are not authorized to kill
rape
unlawful carnal or intimate knowledge of a women without her consent
