What is governance?

The exercise of authority. The people who make decisions, which set the tone for organizations

What are the 3 levels of governance?

Local (Parks and Recreation),


National (NBA, NFL, MLB)


International (FIFA, International Olympic Committee)

What is regulatory power and influence?

-Regulatory power is the ability to make and enforce rules, and to impose punishments. (NFHS, NBA, NCAA)


-2 types of influence Internal and External.


Internal is what is happening inside your organization which you need to be aware of.


External is what is happening outside your organization which requires you to adapt.

Why study governance?

-Understand the big picture- See where you fit in


-Understand how governance fits within Sports Management-


-Apply it to where you work within sports industry- Understand rules, policies, and procedures

Organizational units- Differentiate between them and their duties

*General Assemblies-


-Groups that vote on legislation, rules, policies, and procedures


-Made up of volunteers


*Executive Committees, Governing Boards, and Management Councils-


-Where the "real power" often resides


-Generates the agenda and endorses ideas for the General Assembly to vote on


*Standing Committees-


-Designated groups who deal with specific (and constant) responsibilities


-Finance, Officiating, Compliance, Marketing, Ticketing


*Ad Hoc Committees- Groups who deal with issues on a short-term basis, dissolved once the issue has been addressed


*Executive Staff


-The paid staff who run day-to-day operations for the organization


*Constitution and Bylaws


-Constitution- Documents which outline basic functions, principles, and values. Bylaws-Outlines how business can be conducted
